Hugh was called to the Bar in 2003. Prior to joining the Bar, he was a partner in the Melbourne and Brisbane offices of Mallesons Stephen Jaques (now King & Wood Mallesons), one of Australia’s “Magic Circle” law firms.
He has been involved in many significant and complex litigation and dispute resolution matters, including Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Banking and Finance Law, Family Law, Maritime Law, Aviation Law, Work Health and Safety Law, Banking and Finance Law and Employment Law.
He has appeared before State courts in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, the Federal Court of Australia (including the Full Court) and the High Court of Australia.
Hugh is a qualified and very experienced mediator. He has mediated many hundreds of disputes since the mid-1980s, both as mediator and counsel and solicitor for a party to the mediation.
He is a Commander in the Navy Reserve and the Head of the Queensland Navy Legal Panel. He has represented Navy in Washington and elsewhere during the development of the Alternative Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management programme for Defence, provided specialist work health and safety advice and assistance to Defence, prepared policy documents for Defence, conducted Routine Inquiries and Inquiry Officer Inquiries for Defence, reviewed Routine Inquiry Reports for Navy and Defence, appeared before Boards and Commissions of Inquiry and appeared as both Counsel representing accused persons and to prosecute at Courts-Martial and before Defence Force Magistrates and the Australian Military Court.
